Should Students Speak Only English in Class

Here is a seemingly easy question: Should a policy of English only be put into place in the English learning classroom? Your gut answer may be yes, English only is the only way students will learn English! However, there may be some exceptions to this  rule. To begin with, lets look at some of the arguments made for  an English only policy in the classroom: Students will learn to speak English  by speaking English.Allowing students to speak other languages distract them from the task of learning English.Students who dont speak only  English are also not thinking in English. Speaking only in English helps students begin speaking English internally.  The only way to become fluent in a language is by being immersed in the language.An English  only  policy in class requires them to negotiate the learning process in English.Students speaking another language distract other English learners.English only is part of effective classroom management  that fosters learning and respect. These are all valid arguments for an English only policy in the ESL / EFL classroom. However, there are certainly arguments to be made for allowing students to communicate in other languages, especially if they are beginners. Here are some of the better points made in support of allowing other languages to constructively be used in the classroom: Providing or allowing for explanations of grammar concepts in learners L1 (first language) speeds up the learning process.Communicating in another language during class allows students to fill in the gaps, especially if the class is large.Allowing some communication in learners L1 establishes a more relaxed atmosphere that is conducive to learning.Translating difficult  vocabulary items is much easier and less time consuming when other languages are allowed.Committing to an English only policy in class might seem as if the English teacher has, at times, been turned into a traffic cop.Students are limited in learning complex concepts through a lack of English vocabulary related to the grammar of  English. These points are also equally valid reasons to perhaps allow some communication in learners L1. The truth is, its a thorny issue! Even those that subscribe to an English only policy accept some exceptions. Pragmatically, there are some instances in which a few words of explanation in another language can do a world of good. Exception 1: If, After Numerous Attempts... If, after numerous attempts to explain a concept in English, students still do not understand a given concept, it helps to give a short explanation in students L1. Here are some suggestions on these short interruptions to explain. If you can speak students L1, explain the concept. Mistakes made in students L1 can actually help build rapport.  If you cant speak students L1, ask a student who clearly understands the concept. Make sure to vary students who explain so as to not create a  teachers pet.  If you can understand students L1, ask students to explain the concept to you in their own language. This helps to check their understanding and show students that you are also a language learner.   Exception 2: Test Directions If you teach in a situation that requires students to take comprehensive tests in English, make sure students understand the directions exactly. Unfortunately, students often do poorly on a test due to their lack of understanding about the assessments directions rather than linguistic abilities. In this case, its a good idea to go over the directions in students L1. Here are some suggestions on activities you can use to make sure students understand. Have students translate the directions into their L1. Group students together and have them discuss differences in translation and understanding.Copy directions onto separate strips of paper and distribute to the class. Each student is responsible for translating one strip. Ask students to read the English passage first and then the translation. Discuss as a class or in groups whether the translation is correct or incorrect.Provide example questions for directions. First, read the directions in English, then read them in students L1. Have students complete practice questions to check their understanding. Clear Explanations in Learners L1 Helps Allowing more advanced learners to  help other learners in their own language really moves the class along. Its purely a pragmatic question in this case. Sometimes it is  more valuable for the class to take a five-minute break from English only rather than spend fifteen minutes repeating concepts that students cant  understand. Some students English language skills may not allow them to understand complicated structural, grammar or vocabulary issues. In a perfect world, the teacher could explain any grammar concept clearly enough that each student can understand. However, especially in the case of beginners, students really need help from their own language. Playing Cop It is unlikely any teacher really enjoys disciplining the class. When a teacher pays  attention to another student, it is almost impossible to make sure that others are not speaking in a language other than English. Admittedly, students speaking in other languages can disturb others. It is important for a teacher to step in and discourage conversations in other languages. However, disrupting a good conversation in English in order to tell others to speak  English only  can disrupt a good flow during the lesson. Perhaps the best policy is English only—but with a few caveats. Strictly insisting that no student speak a word of another language is a daunting task. Creating an  English only  atmosphere in class should be an important goal, but not the end of a friendly English learning environment.

And when they opened up to one another tell each how it feels to be who they are, live in their world and the problems that arise from being who they are. Ultimately, the viewers learned how all of them hate who they are. However, do they have a choice in the matter or is it some stereotype they just have to follow. All five had issues stirring within their families. Whether it was neglect, abuse or domineering parents, they dealt with it in their own way. Some viewers or critics may say they didnt because at the end of the day nothing had changed. However, it may not have been visible but it was internal. For instance, research suggest that adolescents and parents think well of each other. This is far from assumption. Her father drives a BMW and Claire herself wears diamond earrings and eats sushi. Because of their cloths, money and taste, Claire and her friends feel that they above everyone else. What was noted in the movie was that john home life is not a pleasant one. The physical and emotional abuse he suffered may be the cause of his behavior. Never the less, his home life or his friends may or may not have contributed to his identity. In fact it was never determined if John friends were in fact criminal or are they just tough guys in school. Withdrawn adolescent, the Gothic group, sometimes tends to wear black. Allison was just that type of person. What the viewer had to figure out from the movie was why was she withdrawn? From the three approaches to the study of identity during adolescences, Allison seemed to lack self-esteem. Allison must have felt she was not attractive enough to be connected to anything. She sat in the back of the library with a hood over her head and hair in her face. Whats funny is that as time progressed she attempted to stand out as something she was not. The attention seeker that she was, she displayed Eriksons theory of identity crisis. She fabricated an image about herself in order to make herself feel secure and accepted to others. One thing I found surprising was from lessons; adolescents self-esteem is enhanced by parental approval, peer support and success in school. Three of the five had this effect. Andrew because he was a member of the wrestling teams had parental approval from his fat her and teammates to win. Claire has peer support from the others in her social class, which can lead one to believe if my friends think and say it, it must be true. And Brian had somewhat of a high self-esteem, he knew he was smarter that the rest. And at the end of the movie he displayed that with the essay he wrote for Mr. Vernon. The group developed an intimacy that I had hope would had carried to Monday. Except we have no way of knowing that. But for those six hours, the group talked, connected and bonded. Their individual conceptions about friendship changed. Claire realized that if her friends would take the time and get to know Allison they would like her. And if Brain friends would see that the pressure they face to make good grades are not so different from athletes when they have a competition to compete in. Claire and Allison intimacy was seen when Claire took Allison and pull make-up on her. The concern of trust and loyalty was not an issue for either. The guys connected by dancing together on the table. The biggest display of intimacy came when the group were discussing why each other was placed in detention, and the conversations they had told of each others friends. The scene was filled with tears and emotions. In my opinion, when someone is comfortable enough to cry in front of strangers, that pe rson is no longer a stranger but a dear, comforting friends. The group had gained news friends, friends that did not replacing previous ones. Their circle of friendship has broadened beyond ages, social class and intelligence. Within every movie therere romantic encounters. Confucius says Opposites attracted, and from this movie the saying is true. Late in adolescence intimacy with the opposite sex peers develop. Well, the Breakfast Club displayed many intimate moments. Most evident was that between same sex and opposite sex. Claire and Allison experience a moment that lead to the discovery that Allison was an attractive young lady. Cause of the change, Andrew developed an attraction to Allison. The two were complete opposite; one a jock and the other a faceless nobody. Then there was the chemistry between John and Claire. The good girl, bad boy love affair is old but too. The Breakfast Club has to be one of my all time favorite movies. Not until I started this assignment had I real ized the connection between the class and the movie. The writer of this movie must have had the formal knowledge that which I just acquired. The movie hit of true adolescent development even if the actors and actresses looked too old for the part. Basic Statistics for Business and Economics Essay Over the last four weeks of being in the QNT/351 course our team has learned a lot about researching a hypothesis and understanding the mean. The hypothesis testing begins with the statement and the assumption that determines the population of the mean, (Lind, 2011, p.288.). There are five steps taken which include; state the hypothesis, select level of significance for it, identify the test statistics, formulate decision rule, and take a sample to arrive at a decision. On the contrary, however, McClave, 2011 states that there are seven steps including; null hypothesis, alternate hypothesis, test statistic, rejection region, assumptions, experiment and calculation of test statistic, and the conclusion. With setting a hypothesis and testing it is important to understand the mean and how to compare it amongst two or more groups. With testing the mean with multiple groups, the data collected is used to help determine the probability of a given amongst two distinct groups being analyzed which have the same or equal variances. This info it all based off the given hypothesis and should result in proving the null hypothesis stated. When looking at the mean the distance noted between the hypothesis and the mean placed is a value given as a result of the probability of occurrence. When analyzing and testing the means of the two groups we use the variance analysis. An example of this type would be testing the means of the two groups based off statistical models and valid conclusions. Along with completing the testing of the means of the groups, we must also calculate the variance according to the distribution of the differences in means. If the standard deviation is known we can calculate the z-score by using the difference of the variance and the mean. In calculating the correlation between the two variables we see that it is crucial to know the characteristics of the coefficient. According to Lind, 2011 pages 386-389 we can calculate the coefficient of correlation. The coefficient of correlation can help dete rmine the cause as well as effect amongst the two variables. Alfred Hitchcocks Rear Window Essay examples -- Film Movies

Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window In Rear Window, Alfred Hitchcock took a plot-driven short story and transformed it into a character-driven movie. Although differences must exist between text and film, because of the limitations and advantages of the different media, Hitchcock has done more than translate a word-based story into a visual movie. Aside from adding enough details to fill a two-hour movie, Hitchcock has done much to change the perspective of the story, as well as the main character. The novel’s Hal Jeffries, a seemingly hard-boiled and not overly intellectual man contrasts sharply with the photojournalist J.B. Jeffries of the movie. The addition of supporting characters, such as Lisa, diminishes somewhat the loneliness of the short story character. The character in the short story has more in common with Humphrey Bogart’s Sam Spade than with Jimmy Stewart’s Jeff. That Hitchcock took a story written in a style similar to Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler, and cho se not to make a film noir detective story speaks much to Hitchcock’s purpose here. Rather than creating a conventional detective story, Hitchcock creates an everyman, whose injury prevents him from action. The impotence the character feels heightens the tension of the film, as well by forcing the viewers to identify with his frustration. The movie disguises the many of the darker moments with humor, a device commonly used to lessen the shock of less acceptable aspects of a story. While the story was merely the narrative of one man, the film portrays different concepts of, and stages of love, in the images of the people across the way. The story is a guiltily related narrative of one man’s voyeurism, repeatedly rationalized by him. B... ...that we, not Jeff, have been spying on the neighbors across the way. While both the story and the film contain aspects of voyeurism, as well as a physically limited character, Hitchcock’s film does more than simply add enough filler to complete a movie. He adds facets to the character not included in the story. He provides the character with a career and social life and motivation. Additionally, Hitchcock uses the visual aspects of the film to convey more about the characters. By associating Thorwald with the color red, and using light and shadow to highlight Jeff’s ambivalence about Lisa, we get hints about how we are supposed to feel about the various characters. Hitchcock has taken an adequate short story and transformed it into a fascinating and funny character study that seems to comment on the isolation of life in a modern urban environment.

How does disability affect child development? Essay

The situation that I chose to use on this topic is based from my own personal experience, I have a 7 year old son who was born with profound hearing loss and was also recently diagnosed with severe Autism. When he was young prior to the diagnosis of his condition I didn’t see anything wrong with him, being a young Mom to my first born I had little knowledge about child’s development, he looked normal to me because he was always smiling and giggling, he was eating right and rarely gets sick so I was at ease and never really thought that something was wrong. But everything changed when he turned 1 year old. I noticed how delayed he was compared to other children his age, he wasn’t walking and couldn’t sit by himself, he wasn’t responding to his name and wasn’t engaged to activities or toys. His development was so delayed that he didn’t start walking until he was 2 years old, he only learned to sit straight by himself when he turned a yea r and a half but he still needed guidance otherwise he’d lose balance and would fall. Living in a country where it was impossible to get access to medical needs needed for my son’s condition, we were in a country where you need to have money to get your child assessed and diagnosed and we weren’t that rich to afford it. We were lucky when we finally got our visa to come here in Canada as a Permanent Resident when my son just turned 2, for the first time we were able to get him assessed and diagnosed, that was when we found out that he was born with profound hearing loss on both ears and that explained his poor balance and delayed development. A year after the diagnosis my son was able to undergo a surgery, he had his cochlear implants to get access to sounds. We were told it will take years for him to learn to speak but it didn’t stop from there. Two years after his surgery my son was diagnosed with severe autism, he was five. I saw the sudden change in his behavior as he was growing and everything became more challenging, he stopped wearing his c ochlear implants for reason we don’t know till these days. My son is still non-verbal, but he’s getting interventions from specialized services, he goes to an inclusive school and he’s getting a lot of support and help from the school. He’s shown progress ever since this agency from specialized services started working with him, school and support from specialized services has helped him a lot and we are lucky to be here in Canada were supports for children is always there. As I faced these challenges with my son all these years I’ve learned a lot of things, I’ve learned that there are different reasons out there resulting to why a child develops a learning or behaviour problems, my son’s journey for instance is an example of a situation where he got his learning and behaviour problems from his disability, his deafness and Autism affected his development in so many ways like his; social development, emotional, communication and language. He was born with a disability and special needs but with the help of intervention and support from school and the services provided by the Government he’s able to learn things to improve his learning and behavior problems. No medical support and assessment could also be a reason resulting to a child’s learning and behavior problem, my son and I were lucky to be given the opportunity to come live in Canada where medical support and intervention for children with special needs are priori tized. Children from a country with no medical help and support are likely to develop learning problems because of the lack of intervention to help support them in areas they are in need of help. My son was in that situation for a short time, that situation where we can’t do anything because money is stopping us from getting medical support. Despite my son’s disability we’re just lucky to be receiving all the supports there is. There are a lot of explanations why a disability can affect a child’s development, it depends on what specific type of disability a child has and which area of a child’s development this disability affect. A child may have ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Asperger’s syndrome and Down syndrome, all these types of disabilities affect a child’s development that causes a problem with their learning ability. Autism affects a child’s emotional and social development, Autistic children appear to lack a â€Å"theory of mind’. (Baron-Cohen, nd.). Children with Autism prefer to be alone and they may have difficulty regulating their behavior which results in crying and even sometimes self-injurious. Reinforcements and daily modeling and teaching are very important to support a child with Autism build up their ability and knowledge. Same goes to children with hearing impairment that affects their language and communication skills, there are different disabilities and each result to learning and behavior problem, most disabilities are stopping a child’s normal development and sometimes causing a child distress and frustration also to the family’s part. A child with disability can be really challenging because some children with disability such as learning or physical disability may be exposed to discrimination at school by other students and that they will be treated differently than the rest of the students, they may get bullied and teased by other classmates because of their condition which can affect their self-confidence and in turn affect their learning ability and development.
